It is mainly used to preserve body heat. As the head is the most exposed area, the neoprene hood acts as an insulating barrier to prevent heat loss and prevent hypothermia during long immersions.
The thickness depends on the water temperature: 3 mm for warm water (25°C+), 5 mm for temperate water (18–24°C), and 7 mm for cold water (<18°C). The colder the water, the thicker the insulation should be.
Choose a balaclava with a smooth collar or integrated skirt to slip under the wetsuit joint. This limits the circulation of cold water inside and improves the seal.
